CEO Circle – Feike Sijbesma

Feike Sijbesma

Former CEO of DSM

Feike has been in CEO of Royal DSM for nearly 13 years (2007 till 2020) and over 20 years on the Managing Board. He transformed DSM from a (bulk)chemical company into a Life Sciences & Materials Sciences company, focusing on nutrition, health, and sustainable living. DSM is a global leader in food/nutritional ingredients and a leading company in sustainable materials and solutions among others for alternative energy sources. At DSM sustainability is not only a key responsibility but also a core value and a main business driver. This is also reflected in the more than tripling of the share price during his CEO tenure; “doing well by doing good”. Feike also considers diversity very important for an innovative company, focusing on long-term value creation for all stakeholders.

Since early 2020, Feike transitioned to the role of Honorary Chairman of Royal DSM.  In 2021 Feike served as the Special Corona Envoy for The Netherlands. He sits on a variety of Supervisory Boards, like Royal Philips, Unilever, and the Dutch Central Bank (DNB).

He is co-chair, together with Ban Ki-Moon, of the Global Center on Adaptation. He is one of the Climate Leaders of the World Bank, focusing on carbon pricing (CPLC). He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the World Economic Forum and is co-chairing the Climate CEO Climate Leaders group. He is also a member of the newly formed Advisory Board of the IMF. Feike is senior advising chair of Africa Improved Foods (AIF), addressing malnutrition in Africa.

Feike is a recipient of the Humanitarian of the Year Award & Leaders of Change Award presented by the United Nations; received an honorary doctorate from Maastricht University as well as Groningen University, both in The Netherlands; he was listed by Fortune on the World’s 50 Greatest Leaders, by Harvard as World’s 100 most successful CEO’s and he received the Courage to Lead Award from the World Resources Institute.

Feike studied medical- and molecular biology at Utrecht University and business administration at Erasmus University Rotterdam.
