Emily King

Emily King (LLB/MSc) has more than a decade’s experience working in and researching food systems in Aotearoa New Zealand and around the world. She’s worked with dozens of organisations including municipalities, central government, community food groups, and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations helping Pacific island nations with food projects. She’s trained hundreds of individuals through workshops and webinars on food systems change. In 2023 Emily wrote Re-food, the go-to book on food systems change in New Zealand. Emily created the social enterprise Spira in 2017 to help more businesses and organisations throughout Aotearoa contribute to positive fixes in the food system and through that she runs the Spira Food Systems Academy to train people in food systems change. She was named one of Food Tank’s top 20 global food leaders under 40, and one of the Top 50 Women in Food and Drink Aotearoa New Zealand 2024, for her work restoring our food system. She’s judged the Outstanding New Zealand Food Producer awards sustainability category since 2017, helped set up The Kitchen Project, Kai Waiheke, and facilitated the New Zealand Government’s Food Summit Dialogues in the lead up to the UN Food System Summit 2021.
